FAQ: Obstructive Apnea vs. Central Nervous System Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive apnea occurs when tissues collapse in the airway. Central Apnea happens when the nervous system fails to signal the body to breathe.

Obstructive Apnea:  occurs when there is effort to breathe, but the airway is blocked anywhere from sinuses to mouth and throat. This is usually due to excess body weight or flabby tissues, but not always. Sometimes it is due to inflammation from food or chemical sensitivities.

Can Obstructive Apnea symptoms be improved?  YES. There are exercises that can be done to reduce severity of symptoms.  Find out how by booking a session with Dr. Drewry.

How is Central Sleep Apnea different from Obstructive Sleep Apnea? Central Nervous System Sleep Apnea happens when the brain (nervous system) fails to signal the body to breathe during sleep.  For a small percentage of people this happens because they have a very serious illness. Millions more people have Central Apnea caused by the lingering effects of a life-threatening traumatizing event. Even watching the news can be traumatizing for many people. Trauma-based Central Sleep Apnea is curable and Dr. Drewry has researched and developed a flexible protocol that she teaches to health care practitioners.  She also takes on 4 private clients per month.

Central Nervous System Sleep Apnea:  occurs when the nervous system fails to signal the body to breathe.  It is widely recognized in the medical and sleep community that there are 5 types of Central Apnea and they all add up to a very small number of people - worldwide.
You will read below about the "idiopathic" cause of central apnea.  Idiopathic means "unknown".  Sleep doctors are as yet unaware of Dr. Drewry's discovery that the main idiopathic cause of central apnea is Post-traumatic stress.

If you read information on the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical, or National Sleep Foundation you will see the traditionally known causes of Central Nervous System Sleep Apnea. This outdated point of view states that only 2% of the population worldwide has Central Nervous System Apnea caused by the following rarely occurring issues:

1. Cheyne-Stokes Breathing: associated with congestive heart failure or stroke.

2. Drug-induced from opioids such as oxycodone and codeine.

3. High-altitude breathing - lack oxygen can cause central apnea.

4. Complex apnea that occurs after using a CPAP.  There are many studies that show that CPAP use causes PTSD in many people.

THIS IS THE GAME-CHANGER:

5. Idiopathic (unknown).
Now the unknown is known: Dr. Damaris Drewry discovered in 2008 that the curable type of central apnea is caused by the lingering effects of traumatizing events (PTSD) during which a person believes he or she is going to die. There are hundreds of scenarios where this happens. The biggest categories of people at risk are combat veterans, children, people who have had a near-drowning, car accident, ether for surgery, birth trauma, and many more that Dr. Drewry has identified.  IF you would like a copy of her research articles please contact her by email.  Scroll to bottom of page for contact info.
